Free Thai Lesson 3

Bring the first two lessons together in a short conversation. Allow about 5–10 minutes. You do not need to speak perfectly: practise starting, responding, and asking for help when you need it.

1. Read a complete conversation

SpeakerThaiEnglish
Tonสวัสดีครับ วันนี้ไปไหนHello. Where are you going today?
Learnerยังไม่รู้เลยค่ะ แล้วคุณล่ะI do not know yet. What about you?
Tonไปเชียงใหม่ครับI am going to Chiang Mai.
LearnerจริงเหรอReally?
Tonใช่ครับYes.
Learnerขอบคุณค่ะThank you.

The learner’s ค่ะ is an example, not a requirement. Use ครับ or another appropriate speaking style if it fits you. In real conversation, choose reactions that match what the other person says.

2. Notice what you already know

  • สวัสดี starts the conversation.
  • ยังไม่รู้เลย gives an honest answer when you do not know yet.
  • แล้วคุณล่ะ returns a question.
  • จริงเหรอ reacts to new information.
  • If you lose track, use ไม่เข้าใจ or พูดช้า ๆ หน่อย from Lesson 1.

3. Practise three situations

  • A greeting: introduce the start of an exchange with สวัสดี.
  • A plan: answer a question about where you will go. If you have not decided, use ยังไม่รู้เลย.
  • A repair: ask the speaker to slow down when you do not understand.
Example responses

Greeting: สวัสดีครับ / สวัสดีค่ะ. Plan: ยังไม่รู้เลย แล้วคุณล่ะ. Repair: ไม่เข้าใจครับ พูดช้า ๆ หน่อยครับ / ไม่เข้าใจค่ะ พูดช้า ๆ หน่อยค่ะ.

4. Your 30-second speaking challenge

Take both roles or practise with a partner. Start with a greeting, ask วันนี้ไปไหน, give an answer, and add one reaction. If you get stuck, ask for slower speech. Repeat once and aim for a clearer exchange, not a faster one.

Check your progress

  • Can you choose a phrase without reading the English translation?
  • Can you ask for help instead of stopping the conversation?
  • Can you change one line rather than repeating the same script?

Keep learning

You have practised a small set of useful phrases. Continue with short videos and articles, then build vocabulary around situations you meet in your own life.
