In Lesson 2, practise short responses that help a conversation continue. Allow about 5–10 minutes. You will learn to ask “What about you?”, react to new information, and say you do not know yet.
1. Learn three responses
| Thai | Reading aid | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| แล้วคุณล่ะ | laeo khun la | And you? / What about you? |
| จริงเหรอ | ching roe | Really? |
| ยังไม่รู้เลย | yang mai ru loei | I do not know yet |
The English-letter spelling is a simple reading aid, not IPA. It does not show every sound or tone. Listen to the Thai and practise aloud rather than relying on spelling alone.
แล้วคุณล่ะ returns a question to the other person. จริงเหรอ reacts to something you have just heard and is common in conversation. ยังไม่รู้เลย can be used when you have not decided or do not yet know the answer. The expressions are conversational; choose wording and tone that fit the person you are speaking with.
2. A short conversation
| Speaker | Thai | English |
|---|---|---|
| A | วันนี้ไปไหน | Where are you going today? |
| B | ยังไม่รู้เลย แล้วคุณล่ะ | I do not know yet. What about you? |
| A | ไปเชียงใหม่ | I am going to Chiang Mai. |
| B | จริงเหรอ | Really? |
Thai often leaves out a subject when the context is clear. First read both roles slowly. Then cover B’s lines and respond from memory. These lines are casual; you can practise more polite versions with your teacher.
3. What about ก็…?
ก็ is a flexible word whose meaning depends on the sentence. It is not a word to add to every answer. For example, ผมก็ชอบ means “I like it too” in the right context. At this stage, recognise it in a complete phrase rather than translating it the same way every time.
4. Try the response
- Your friend asks where you will go, but you have not decided. What could you say?
- Someone answers your question. How can you ask the same question back?
- Your friend tells you surprising news. What short reaction could you use?
Show the answers
1. ยังไม่รู้เลย. 2. แล้วคุณล่ะ. 3. จริงเหรอ. Practise each response with an appropriate tone of voice.
Your quick challenge
Ask a simple question, listen to the answer, and use แล้วคุณล่ะ when it makes sense to return a question. Practise one complete exchange instead of memorising isolated words.
