5 Useful Thai Phrases for Beginners

Your first Thai conversation does not need to be long. A greeting, a thank-you, and a way to ask for help give you a useful place to start. Use these five phrases in short exchanges, then practise them in a situation you might actually meet.

Five phrases to start with

สวัสดีsawat diiHello
ขอบคุณkhop khunThank you
ขอโทษkho thotSorry / excuse me
ไม่เข้าใจmai khao chaiI do not understand
พูดช้า ๆ หน่อยphut cha cha noiPlease speak a little more slowly

The English-letter spelling is a simple reading aid, not IPA. It does not show every sound or tone. Listen to the Thai and practise aloud rather than relying on spelling alone.

Make the phrase polite

ครับ (khrap) and ค่ะ (kha) are common polite particles. A male speaker commonly uses ครับ; a female speaker commonly uses ค่ะ for statements. Usage can also reflect the speaker’s identity and speaking style. For example: สวัสดีครับ or สวัสดีค่ะ. You do not need to add both.

Use them in real situations

  • Greet someone: สวัสดีครับ / สวัสดีค่ะ.
  • After receiving help, say ขอบคุณครับ / ขอบคุณค่ะ.
  • To get someone’s attention politely, start with ขอโทษครับ / ขอโทษค่ะ.
  • If a sentence is unclear, say ไม่เข้าใจ. Then ask พูดช้า ๆ หน่อยครับ / พูดช้า ๆ หน่อยค่ะ.

Practise for two minutes

Read each Thai phrase once, listen to an example, and repeat it. Next, cover the English meaning and decide which phrase fits: you receive a drink; you meet your teacher; someone speaks too quickly. Say a complete response aloud, including a polite particle if it fits your speaking style.

Check your answers

For a drink: ขอบคุณ. When meeting your teacher: สวัสดี. When speech is too fast: พูดช้า ๆ หน่อย. You can first say ไม่เข้าใจ if you did not understand.
