Thai Numbers 1–10: A Beginner’s Guide

Learning Thai numbers from one to ten helps you follow simple counts and recognise numbers you hear in daily life. Start with the words, then practise recognising them out of order. Being able to count in a sequence is useful, but recognising a single number is the next step.

Thai numbers from one to ten

The English-letter spelling is a simple reading aid, not IPA. It does not show every sound or tone. Listen to the Thai and practise aloud rather than relying on spelling alone.

Pay attention to the ending

สี่ (four) and สิบ (ten) are different words. Four has no final consonant, while ten ends with a short closed-lip /p/ sound. Do not add an extra vowel after the final consonant. Listen closely to vowel length and tone as well as the consonants.

Three ways to practise

• Count up from one to ten slowly, then count down from ten to one.
• Write the digits 1–10 on separate cards. Shuffle them and say the Thai word for each card.
• Choose three numbers, say them aloud, and write the digits from memory. Repeat with a new order.

What numbers are these? A: สาม. B: เก้า. C: หก. Now say the Thai words for 2, 8, and 10 without looking at the table.

Use numbers carefully in a sentence

Thai commonly uses classifiers when counting objects. The number alone is a good starting point, but it is not always the complete phrase for “two coffees” or “three books”. Learn the classifier together with the object as you expand your vocabulary. For example, หนังสือสามเล่ม means three books.
