How to Say No in Thai: ไม่, ไม่ได้, and ไม่เอา

Thai does not have one response that works for every English “no”. A natural reply depends on what you are answering: a yes/no question, a request, or an offer. These three expressions give you a useful starting point, but they are not interchangeable.

Three common expressions

ThaiReading aidUse
ไม่maiNegates a verb or adjective: ไม่รู้ = do not know
ไม่ได้mai daiCan express inability or that something is not allowed; context matters
ไม่เอาmai aoDeclines an item or says you do not want it

The English-letter spelling is a simple reading aid, not IPA. It does not show every sound or tone. Listen to the Thai and practise aloud rather than relying on spelling alone.

1. ไม่: negate the statement

Place ไม่ before the verb or adjective you want to negate. รู้ means “know”, so ไม่รู้ means “do not know”. ชอบ means “like”, so ไม่ชอบ means “do not like”. In an answer, repeating the relevant verb often sounds clearer than using ไม่ on its own.

Example: ชอบไหม? — Do you like it? ไม่ชอบครับ / ไม่ชอบค่ะ — I do not like it.

2. ไม่ได้: cannot or not allowed

ไม่ได้ can indicate that an action is not possible or permitted. In other sentence patterns it can also be part of saying that an action did not happen. Learn it in a complete sentence and use context to interpret the meaning.

Example: วันนี้ไปไม่ได้ครับ / วันนี้ไปไม่ได้ค่ะ — I cannot go today.

3. ไม่เอา: decline an item

Use ไม่เอา when you do not want an offered item. It can sound direct, so a polite particle and a thank-you help make an everyday refusal warmer. Your tone of voice matters too.

Example: ไม่เอาครับ ขอบคุณครับ / ไม่เอาค่ะ ขอบคุณค่ะ — No, thank you.

Choose the response

A friend offers you an extra drink. Which expression best fits declining it? Someone asks if you know the answer. How would you say you do not know? You cannot go today. What sentence could you use?

Check your choices

For the drink: ไม่เอาครับ ขอบคุณครับ / ไม่เอาค่ะ ขอบคุณค่ะ. For not knowing: ไม่รู้ครับ / ไม่รู้ค่ะ. For today: วันนี้ไปไม่ได้ครับ / วันนี้ไปไม่ได้ค่ะ.
